Trying to find a job can be tough in a slow economy. These days there are about 5 candidates for every job opening. However, there are several tools available for job seekers to use. Effective use of these tools can help snag a job.
One method to look for work is to fill out job applications online. Several companies have websites with sections devoted to applying for jobs. One thing to be aware of is the use of keywords with applications. They are the indicators that employers identify with for positions they are trying to fill. In recent years, employers have been using electronic and computerized screening systems to initially review applications. In addition to spelling and grammar errors, they are looking for keywords that connect with what they are looking for. Keywords can be used in the job title of the position applied for. Some companies seek a salesperson as opposed to an account executive.
The job fair can be a great way to find out about job leads. Educational institutions and community agencies often sponsor these. The best way to prepare for these is similar to preparing for an interview. Dress professionally for meeting with company representatives. Bring several copies of your resume to give to different companies. Some organizations may even conduct job interviews on the spot. Prepare for the job fair as much as possible. Research what companies will be there. Appear confident to company representatives. Talk with as many representatives as possible. Get contact information from employers you make contact with for follow ups. Be aware of simple things like eye contact and shaking hands. Making a good first impression can go a long way.
Job search sites are another resource that can be used with finding a job. Job boards like Career Builder and Monster.com have thousands of jobs available across the country. Many job sites are available with just local and regional jobs showcased. There are also sites that specialize in certain fields such as health care and legal jobs. There are so many job sites available, job seekers can use different sites for different approaches to suit their needs.
